AR-Use it or lose it!
OurThe best way to become a better runner is to run.
The best way to become a better swimmer is to swim.
The best way to become a better reader is to READ!
Our philosophy is that if you do something everyday, you will get better. We encourage our students to read every day. Being a more skilled reader will help them in every aspect of their school careers including math (don't forget those word problems!)
Each nine weeks, the students will have a reading requirement. This will count for two grades for the nine weeks average. They will get one grade for earning the minimum points. The second grade will be their quizzing average.

FAQ
How can my child get AR books?
- Most books are AR. They add thousands of new books everyday. Check here to see if some on your child's personal bookshelf are AR books.
- Fourth graders can go to the BES library daily right after announcements.
- The fourth grade teachers have many AR books in their classroom libraries.
- Visit the public library. They offer many programs for children and and have thousands of books. Make it a part of your routine and encourage them to be lifelong readers.
- Read the weekly AR report.
- Talk to your child about their reading efforts.
- Praise outstanding reading effort.
- Provide consequences for little or no reading effort.
- Look over the AR report. The last column says ATOS/BL. This is the book level. Students are reading good fit books if they are scoring between 80-100. Don't worry if it seems if they are reading books that seem too easy. Too easy is better than too hard especially at the beginning of the year. If a book is too hard, they will not be forming meaning as they are reading. AR measures comprehension (which is the BIG reading BEAR!)
- Our focus is to help your child develop into a well rounded, confident reader. Our reading program is really divided into quarters.
- First nine weeks: frequency, consistency and momentum
- Second nine weeks: balanced reading (fiction and nonfiction)
- Third nine weeks: endurance and stamina
- Fourth nine weeks: finding what you love to read. Kids that don't love to read haven't found a type of book that they enjoy.
- We use AR to enforce good reading habits. Students that struggle with reading are great at avoidance behaviors. They are skilled at "faking" it. With AR, it's hard to hide what's giving your child a hard time. We want to bring that to light, talk about it, and work on it. Kids don't understand that EVERYONE struggles with reading at times, even adults, because it is hard. Once they understand that they are not alone, we have won half of the battle.
